"Es ist okay, wenn Sie sich selber ein Geschenk gekauft haben oder zwei oder vielleicht zehn."
Diesen Satz wiederholten TV-Moderatoren in den
USA vor den Festtagen immer wieder. Warum bloss?
Es war der bekannte Talkmaster Conan O'Brien, der in seiner Sendung
"Conan" das eigenartige Phänomen publik machte. "Furchterregend",
sagte O'Brien nur - eine Erklärung hatte er nicht.
O'Brien hatte seinen Zuschauern Videoaufnahmen von 30 unterschiedlichen
lokalen TV-Stationen der USA gezeigt. Es waren Moderatoren zu sehen,
die alle den einen seltsamen Satz sagten: "Es ist okay, Sie können
es zugeben, wenn Sie sich selber ein Geschenk gekauft haben oder zwei
oder vielleicht zehn." Ein Zufall kann ausgeschlossen werden, handelt
es sich doch weder um eine bekannte Phrase noch um ein Geschehnis,
dessen Erklärung exakt dieser Wortfolge bedurft hätte.
Wer oder was könnte also hinter dem Mantra stecken?
Verschwörungstheoretiker melden sich in Blogs und Foren
erwartungsgemäss eifrig zu Wort - es gehe in einer heimlichen,
konzernübergreifenden, koordinierten Aktion darum, die
US-Konsumenten zu hypnotisieren, einen Kaufrausch zu lancieren. Die
Weihnachtsgeschäfte sind bekanntlich für den US-Einzelhandel
überlebenswichtig: 30 Prozent des Jahresumsatzes und 40 Prozent
des Gewinns werden im Dezember gemacht. Tatsächlich suggeriert der
Satz, dass das Fest der Liebe getrost auch ein Fest der Eigenliebe sein
darf. Niemand solle sich schlecht fühlen, weil er - etwa aus Mangel
an Verwandten oder Freunden - sich selber etwas gönne.
Die Uniformität hat allerdings banalere, gleichwohl unschöne
Gründe. Die meisten dieser Stationen sind finanziell ausgezehrt und
können respektive wollen sich nicht für jede Sendung eigene
Texter und Produzenten leisten. Sie greifen deshalb auf vorgefertigte
Texte oder Textversatzstücke von Partner-Stationen oder von
Agenturen wie AP oder CNN News Source zurück.
